WINTER ~ THE LUNAR CHRONICLES; I found the cover art to be a bit disappointing. There wasn’t even a real red apple in the story, like in the classic fairy tale of Snow White! In this Novel the author invented sour apple petites, which is a Lunar candy. However what is similar to Snow White is when Levana disguises herself as an old woman who offers the princess the apple candy.
Cover Art for WINTER
That being said, why did they not give us readers a picture of the sour apple petites? That to me would have been much more representational to WINTER than an apple. Again, they are trying to play off our social knowledge of Snow White and associate it with that classic fairy tale, even if this Novel is completely different. I just prefer uniqueness and honestly I found the Cover Art for WINTER to be an easy way out for the publishers. Although, it is STILL pretty! ❤
Princess Winter’s refusal to use her Lunar gift has bought her a one-way ticket to CRAZYVILLE! It was very interesting to see how Meyer wrote this character because she is not your typical Snow White character. From her physic to her personality Winter is a stand alone unique character and it was a breath of fresh air to read who and what she had to endure. First, she had to handle being an orphan, only through marriage did Winter have Queen Levana as a Step-Mother. She only had one human friend Jacin Clay and her wolf named Ryu. She was isolated to the palace due to her mental illness and Queen Levana only kept her around (or alive for that matter) because of her long lost love for her father, Evret Hayle.
The Novel goes from Winter to Cinder and finally to Prince Kai. The Novel really gets interesting when Cinder kidnapped Kai and they develop a plan to overthrow Queen Levana. The book builds up climatic tension as the Crew sneak onto Kai’s ship and head for Luna for the wedding. Cause there is nothing more dramatic that being stood up at the alter! Will Levana notice? You’ll just have to read the book to find out!
The book ends with all the main characters from the previous books and dictates their fates! Will Luna become a republic? Will Queen Levana rule or fall? This action packed science fiction turned fairy tale Novel as it all!
So WINTER is the forth Book in The Lunar Chronicles and it concludes the story-line of Cinder, Scarlet, Cress and Winter. I remember waiting in anticipation for this book to come out and when it did I was so pleased with it’s story and how it was written. It also concludes the story to the minor characters like Iko, Throne, Kai, Wolf and Jacin. I think Meyer really outshines herself in this Novel as the Climax and fight scenes are AMAZING! It’s a pleasure to read action packed events and the faith of a planet. I won’t write any spoilers but I was pleased with it’s ending and it will touch your heart! Also I must add that I LOVED the Chapters when the characters were on Lunar, it is such a fantasy sci-fi place beyond the stars.
I can’t say that I disliked this Novel cause I didn’t. However, I will say that even if the character Winter is endearing she is also very annoying. Her lack of maturity really does get old and tiresome when there are key points in the story line that need to move along but can’t because she is acting like a little sister.
But you can’t be mad at Winter for too long as her self sacrifice and mental illness is really the rime and reason behind it all. She does make Scarlet a more likable character (in my opinion) in this Novel as I did not like Scarlet originally; Scarlet’s character with Wolf grows a lot in the Novel WINTER. The only other thing I could mention was the character Jacin. I read online that most readers did not take to Jacin very well, Meyer certainly makes him a complex character and hard to trust and like in the Novel. His love does shine through in the end for Winter, but it probably will not be any reader’s Prince Charming. Meyer meant to write Jacin as the Woodsman who in the original Snow White attempted to murder her as per the Queen’s orders, when he fails Snow White runs from the Kingdom, a similar affect takes place in this Novel.
“She was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken.
Fitting in was not an option.” ― Marissa Meyer,
OWL BOOK RATING
Overall, WINTER will enchant you! There are many Chapters that will pull at your heart strings and keep you up at night wanting to read just one more Chapter. I recommend this Novel to any person who loves Science Fiction and Fairy Tales as it offers the best of both worlds.
